After setting up my online portfolio, I wanted to start expanding my connections and gaining more industry experience through connecting with different professionals who could give me advice. After sending a plea to help to a lot of directors, James Slater, who my peers have worked with before, replied to me asking if I wanted to shadow on a Yard Act music video the next week, to which I took the opportunity.
I took the trip to Manchester, which is like a second home to me at this point after the years at uni. I was really excited to be on the set – it was filmed in Alcatraz in Manchester which is a bar designed to look like a prison. I’ve always wanted to go and have a drink there, but it turns out that my first time going there would be for a music video shoot.
I’ve always wanted to work on or direct a music video, so to be part of a music video production was cool. I got to see Yard Act in their costumes, and it was cool to see the different lighting. I was really interested in the camera team with their big body support gimbal. There were some very cool, creative shots that I saw being filmed, and it was great to chat to different parts of production on a set. The beauty of seeing the actual video finished, and being able to relate that to what I saw behind the scenes was really cool.
